The Square is noted for its 18th Century Classical Church, St Andrew's in the Square from which the square takes its name from. The church is among the finest of its type anywhere in Britain and is Category A listed. The church was enclosed by a later square, built by William Hamilton between 1786 and 1787, which became fashionable homes for some of Glasgow's wealthiest merchants. The migration of the city westwards throughout the 19th century, however, resulted in a gradual slumming of the area. The buildings surrounding the square were mostly demolished in the 1980s, although in 1996 new buildings were completed facing onto the square, with a design sympathetic to the traditional style of Glasgow's tenements. ==St Andrew's in the Square== (詳細はSt Martin-in-the-Fields in London.
